Desalination - Two Methods

Saltwater to Freshwater using Solar Power

MATERIALS: measuring cup, bowl, cup (shorter than the bowl), salt, tablespoon, water, clear plastic wrap, masking tape, small weight

  1. In measuring cup, mix one cup of water and four tablespoons of salt
  2. Place empty cup inside bowl.
  3. Pour salt water inside bowl but not into cup
  4. Cover with clear plastic wrap, tape around edges
  5. Place weight in the middle of the plastic
  6. Place in the sun

 

Saltwater to Freshwater using Heat

MATERIALS: measuring cup, coffee can with plastic lid, funnel, candle, cake cooling rack, salt, tablespoon, water, cylinder, tubing (that fits inside end of funnel) or substitute flex straws

  1. Stir 4 tablespoons of salt into one cup of water.
  2. Pour into coffee can.
  3. Cut hole in plastic lid of coffee can. Hole should be slightly smaller in diameter than the large side of the funnel.
  4. Return lid to can, invert funnel
  5. Place candle on table, cover with cake rack, place can on rack.
  6. Insert one end of tubing into small end of funnel, put the other end of the tubing into a collection container (cylinder)
  7. Light candle
Fresh water is collected in the cylinder
