Future
In a world where water cannot be created are we doomed? Water is the source of life for humans both directly in the fluids we drink and indirectly in the production of the food we eat.
Do the oceans hold a solution to this potential problem?
During the water cycle the water evaporates off of the ocean to form clouds. These clouds then turn into rain water and release saltless water. Solar desalination tries to imitate this process.
Even more important?
The Mojave Watershed, located in San Bernardino county encompasses 4500 square miles.
San Bernardino county's population will grow 500,000 by 2015. The growth will be primarily in Victorville, including the cities of Apple Valley, Hesperia and Adelanto.
California itself has a dilemma, providing water to our 32 billion dollar agricultural industry and continuing the state use of an additional 43 million acre feet of water a year
Conservation will help make water available, but proper watershed management will make sure it is used efficiently.
Scientists are predicting that the demand for water might not be met. The solution might be the construction of canals and dams. Both the solution and the funding have created a debate with the environmentalists opposing the city planners and farmers.
Potential problems California faces include drought which would result in a reduction of water we can access from the Colorado River. Warmer temperatures coupled with spring rainy season could tax the levees in Central California.
The solution to these and other problems also lies with proper watershed management.
